Mindfulness

What is mindfulness?

We’re hearing a lot about mindfulness these days as if it is brand new concept. Mindfulness isn’t something new. It has been around for over 2000 years. Its roots come from Zen Buddhism. In the Zen Buddhist tradition, mindfulness is part of meditation. In fact, Zen means meditation. In our western culture we don’t have to use it for meditation although we certainly can. Mindfulness is achieved by being very aware of what is happening now. We aren’t worrying about what happened yesterday or what might happen tomorrow. We are paying close attention to what is happening right now. We aren’t judging what is happening but are keenly aware of it.

Building Resilience

In this difficult economy it is important to develop resilience to help get through it. People who don’t have resilience can suffer more than they need to when going through tough times. Here are some steps you can take to help you build resilience so you can cope with whatever life throws your way. Mindfulness is listed first and is given more attention because it is such a valuable tool. If we can get ourselves to spending most of our time in the present moment we can be much happier and enjoy life much more. Stress and Heart Disease

Mental Health issues play a huge goal in our physical health. Research is just starting to show just how much. Here is some information on how stress and heart disease are linked.

Stress and Heart Disease- Wendy Garrison, LIMHP/LADC

High levels of stress can make risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol worse. Constant exposure to stress leads to unhealthy elevated levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol raises blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels. Stress can also affect the way blood clots.

About Our Logo...

Developing the logo you see on the left was a spiritual experience for me. It evolved and changed over time into what it is today.

What it is not is just a figure playing ball.

It is symbolic of the healing process that happens in counseling. The human figure and the heart in the ball are biomorphic shapes. Biomorphic is defined as an irregular shape that resembles the naturally developed curves found in living organisms. The figure represents the person reaching for wholeness and a return of their spirit. The spirit is represented by the heart inside the ball.

To me, the human spirit is the core, the very essence of what a person is and is meant to be. When a person is hurting, no matter what the cause, they often lose sight of their spirit and lose themselves. It is my honor and privilege to be there for my clients and help them catch their spirit again.
